  • Satellite tracking is vital for helping us to monitor a pangolin that has just been released. They are very expensive pieces of kit but worth every penny. We monitor released pangolins for the first 3-6 months using these trackers and then they are removed. The tracker is then returned to the manufacturer for a new battery to be installed. A R5000 donation will purchase 25% of a tracker for us.

  • Rehabilitating a pangolin is incredibly labour intensive work. These critical members of the team provide the essential service of walking with the pangolins for many hours each night to keep these nocturnal feeders safe while foraging for ants and termites. They also ensure the pangolins return to the facility to sleep during the day - until they are ready for release. We are looking to hire more protectors to be on standby and ready to receive more rescued pangolins. When there is a lull in the resident pangolin population then the protectors assist with the day-to-day running of the centre too; creating much needed local employment. • The new building that house the veterinary clinic is a little bare at the moment and really needs some new equipment. Specifically, it needs more tools to aid with the diagnosis of ailments that the pangolins might be suffering from. Often the pangolins have been kept in appalling conditions for long periods of time and the faster we can figure out what is ailing them the faster we can get them back out into the wild again. Instead of having to trek to another location with the samples, it is far faster to use our own equipment. The team at the clinic are highly trained and are able to use all the equipment listed below with confidence and accuracy.
    • Microscope - for scat analysis for example
    • Centrifuge machine for blood separation
    • Examination table with rubber traction mat
    • Stethoscope
    • Multiple smaller items (too numerous to list).

  • Communication is key for keeping our facilities running smoothly and efficiently. By constantly checking in with one another we're able to look after the pangolins as best we can. We use two-way handheld radios to communicate during rescues, releases and rehabilitation. By contributing R1000 you are able to help us buy one set of these.

  • The Kalahari is known for its scorching temperatures in the summer and icy chill in the winter. Air conditioning helps us mimic the temperature of the pangolin's burrow to ensure that the reintroduction is a smooth and comfortable transition for them. Help us keep these little friends happy by contributing a whole air conditioner or portion towards it. R1000 is a sixth of an air conditioner.

  • Doing laundry is no easy task on the best of days, now imagine it at a veterinary clinic! Washing machines are invaluable to the smooth running of our rehabilitation facilities. By adding a few new machines to the clinic, the team will be able to operate much more efficiently and look after our friends with comfortable and clean blankets, sheets and whatever else they may need.

  • As any new parent will attest a baby monitor is an essential piece of kit to stop you from having to constantly pop into the baby's room to check all is ok. With pangolins, the same applies. If a pangolin is in distress or unwell in the clinic then this allows the staff to react that much faster to remedy the situation. These pangolins are often traumatised from their experience before they get to us and without the ability to cry out for help, being able to keep an eye on them, while letting them recuperate, is vital. R750 is Approx. - USD: 50 | EUR: 45 | GBP: 38 | AUD: 68 | CAD: 63
  • Last year Pangolin.Africa donated a vehicle to the Kalahari Wildlife Project to have a vehicle on permanent stand by to facilitate the rescue of a pangolin.  As with all vehicles (and especially the ones operating in tough environments like The Nothern Cape), they need constant maintenance as well as the associated costs of fuel and insurance to keep them running. The vehicle is a Toyota Fortuner and is good for several more years but needs upkeep.  R750 is Approx. - USD: 50 | EUR: 45 | GBP: 38 | AUD: 68 | CAD: 63
  • Anyone who has worked in conservation will be able to tell you just how invaluable a batch of camera traps can be. Along with helping us to monitor burrows and release sites they also help with animal population census work as well as monitoring areas of electric fences (another project we are working on). It's important that we buy good quality camera traps with long battery life and most importantly excellent night vision capabilities.

  • A cheaper way to track a pangolin that has been released is by using VHF radio. As the satellite will only send the pangolin's location a couple of times per day (to save battery) we need another way to pinpoint its location on the ground. A VHF signal allows us to find the pangolin, who is normally in a burrow during the day, and monitor it when it emerges to feed. Having both satellite and VHF trackers gives us full redundancy and when we are happy that the pangolin is thriving we locate it with VHF and remove both trackers at the same time. • A fridge and freezer combination is an essential appliance for the smooth running of the rehabilitation centre. Medicine and foods need to be kept cool to keep them fresh and effective. Plus, it just makes doing what we do a lot easier and more convenient. Contribute towards this great combination or purchase a whole set for the team! By contributing R500, you'll be helping with a seventh of a fridge and freezer set.

  • Anyone who has a pet knows that veterinary supplies don't come cheap. Pangolins do react well to most standard medications used by domestic pets (which makes sourcing them easier) but it doesn't make it any cheaper. Coupled with the fact that some pangolins are in an awful condition when they arrive they can require more medications than others. It should be noted that the medicine purchased here is also used for other animals that are brought into the centre such as meerkats, aardwolf, birds of prey and other Kalahari species that are injured or sick.

  • The Kalahari can be bitterly cold during the winter times and even a little fresh during the days too. When the pangolins are being transported or are sleeping in their boxes during the day in the clinic we like to keep them at a constant temperature. These mini heated blankets allow us to do just that. A warm comfortable pangolin is a happy pangolin.

  • This might seem like a simple piece of kit but it is far more useful to a Pangolin Protector than you can imagine. They spend long hours out in the Kalahari bush at night walking the pangolins so they can forage. If we used battery-powered torches for this then we would probably bankrupt the centre. Each protector has two torches - one as a backup. They are also used by the staff at the rehab centre when the power goes off.

  • The boxes in which we transport the pangolins are pretty hefty and are made from thick wood so that they will last. We want to manufacture lots of these and leave them with local stakeholders like the police, rangers, vets, border posts etc so that when a pangolin is rescued we can have a way to transport it safely and securely without having to get a box to them from potentially hundreds of kilometres away. These transport boxes then double as makeshift burrows for the pangolins to inhabit while they are at the clinic and the rehab centre. Each pangolin can use a box for up to three months sometimes. It's their temporary home as they literally get back on their feet after their ordeal. We can literally never have too many of them.
