Pangolin protectors salaries

R2,500.00

Rehabilitating a pangolin is incredibly labour intensive work. These critical members of the team provide the essential service of walking with the pangolins for many hours each night to keep these nocturnal feeders safe while foraging for ants and termites. They also ensure the pangolins return to the facility to sleep during the day – until they are ready for release. We are looking to hire more protectors to be on standby and ready to receive more rescued pangolins. When there is a lull in the resident pangolin population then the protectors assist with the day-to-day running of the centre too; creating much needed local employment.

Description

The average cost per month in terms of salary and food for the resident pangolin protectors is R5,000 per individual. This may not seem like an awful lot compared to western salaries but it is a well-paid position in the Northern Cape where employment opportunities are pretty scarce. Protectors like John and Mohammed work tirelessly when caring for the pangolins and without their innate tracking and bush skills, the natural rehabilitation process would be far harder to achieve. Every “item” you add here to your cart represents 2 weeks of salary for each protector.

If you would like to make a larger contribution of a year’s salary either as an individual or a corporate please get in touch and we can help to arrange that for you.
